I bought that glove from a hedge-cutter in Yorkshire. He was an irascible old boy who used to work like a fury clearing these hedges and ditches.
One terrifying, very dark night, there were sudden incredibly brilliant flashes of light as the bombs fell and the sky became red. In the same country road, where I happened to be standing, were young men and women making love and fooling around. It was extraordinary to see this terrible burning and think of what was going on over the other side of the river. And then to see lovers running up and down the street playing 'Touch' and disappearing into the hedges.
This picture, to me, a symbol of what one was going through. Of the world being torn to pieces. Heaven knows it's mildly put.
