This head is one of several Modigliani drew between 1910-13 which relate to the sculptures he was making at this time.
These are drawings which show us Modigliani’s working process and the way he would carve out, in line on paper, his sculptural intent; distilling, refining, perfecting, pursuing this vision he had of an ideal beauty.
This drawing conveys something of the restless energy of this pursuit. More tonal than his other drawings, the areas of shading give this head a three-dimensional weight. With drawings on both sides, it demonstrates the speed with which he would set down one idea then develop onto the next.
